Damian *

23:50

Damian Chadwick locked the front door to his flat and walked away from the pokey place he now called home, going out at this late hour in search of something to eat because nothing he had in his property seemed appetising enough. His modest home now was just as grim as the items he had in the fridge, and even though he suspected his best bet at a decent meal tonight would come in the form of a greasy kebab that might leave him with stomach ache tomorrow, he was willing to do anything to get out of the flat and get a little bit of fresh air.

As he made his way down the dingy corridor that only had one working lightbulb out of the four that should have been turned on, Damian once again lamented the fact that he had to live in such a grotty place as this. This was a place where the neighbours played loud music 24/7, half the walls had holes in them, and there was literally rubbish piled up in the corners of the corridors. This was also the place he had been forced to call home ever since he had entered into the Witness Protection Scheme after providing evidence that had helped secure the conviction of his uncle, Ronnie Larkhall.

There had been many times that Damian had regretted what he had done, even if he hadn’t had much of a choice in it if he had wanted to avoid prison himself. He had regretted it because he had not only lost a family member in Ronnie, but he had lost his boss and, therefore, his well-paid job as a handler in the gangster’s business empire. Without Ronnie, Damian wasn’t much of anything at all. He had no money, he had no power, and he had no way of ever hoping to live the kind of life he had before he had become a ‘rat’ and grassed his uncle up.

It had been shortly after the court case in which Ronnie and his bodyguard, Bulldog, had been sentenced to prison that Damian had been whisked away from London and told that he would be starting a new life up in Manchester. This was done because Damian needed to assume a new identity in case Ronnie ever sent any of his associates after him to get revenge for what his nephew had done in court. Damian had understood the need for anonymity and the need to move halfway across the country, but that didn’t mean he had to enjoy it.

And he had most certainly not been enjoying it so far.

Leaving behind every single person he had ever known to move to a place he had never set foot in before had left Damian feeling incredibly lonely, and he really was having to start his life from scratch again. The measly amount of money he had been given to help him set up that new life was not exactly going far, and the dreary environment he found himself living in now was almost as dreary as his social life.
